Some of them keep the free subscription, but they have shops with high-end items, or special items for players to buy if theys choose to, thus the company gets funds to sustain the servers, the game, and they get a small-medium profit from it.
At some point you will move to P2P mmorpg. P2P means Pay 2 Play; basically you pay a subscription every month, starting from 5$ up to 14.99$, depending on the quality of the game and its features. Of course most of these P2P mmorpg have a trial period, free of charge, usually between 7 to 14 days of free trial, for you to see if you like the game, and if you would like to subscribe, in most of the cases, you can continue from where the trial ended. This is highly recommended before subscribing to a new mmorpg.
